Holiday pet photo contest: Second place winner Roscoe and Tyler Pollard

Second place winner for our Holiday pet photo contest was Roscoe, the 5 year old Border Collie.

Roscoe lives in O’Fallon Missouri with owner Lara Fairless and furry sister, Muffin the cat.

Roscoe came to live with Lara after he was found in a field and taken to O’Fallon’s Pet Smart store where Lara’s sister worked. The family decided to adopt Roscoe right away and he’s been part of the family every since.

With herder instincts in his breeding it’s no surprise to find out that one of his famous antics is to jump from the car as soon as he enters his neighborhood.

If you live in the St. Louis area it means you are probably getting hammered by snow tonight. Last count was about 4 inches with amounts a bit heavier than that in the south. A number of people on Facebook and Twitter announce being bored to tears with lack of anything interesting to do.

Pet Photography 101: Are there any pet friendly parks in St. Louis where I can photograph my dog?

St. Louis area dog park map

St. Louis and the surrounding area is home to several pet friendly parks. Dog parks to be more precise. Some are free admission while others charge fees based per day or annually. The majority of them are fenced and allow off the leash exercise.

Following are a few dog parks found in the St. Louis area. Embedded links will take you to each site, or a site containing information about that particular park.

While any of these parks would be suitable for photographing your dog, you should check into each individual one before making a decision on where you will shoot. You will want to find out what are the busiest times of the day for each park, what facility they have if any, their hours of operation, rules for admission, etc. If shooting photographs of a small dog, you will be particularly interested in parks that have a separate area for smaller dogs.

Famous pets in photography: Petey, Benji, and Clyde; from black and white to color

Likely one of the best known dogs in silent movie comedy was Petey the Pit bull, the constant companion of “Our Gang“, better known as the Little Rascals. Petey was well known for his loyalty to the gang and his constant antics on the sets of movies and photo shoots.

Petey began his career in the 1920’s performing in 13 feature films between 1921 and 1927. In 1927 he took his father Pal’s spot in the filming of the Buster Brown Comedies, eventually signing a three year contract for the roll. He later went on to do work with Our Gang in the Little Rascals series. Petey worked his final film when he starred in the feature movie  ”A Tough Winter”,  released in 1930. (full article) Photo credit/ Everett

Famous pets in photography: Rin Tin Tin, Lassie, and Toto; dogs of the silver screen

Pets have held rolls in stardom almost as long as human actors. Some of the earliest well know pet actors began their careers in the time of silent movies and black and white film. Rin Tin Tin, Lassie, and Toto are probably the most notable and easily recognized famous pets of all time. It was because of these lovable pets that many early movies were such a big hit with whole families. They have touched the lives of millions over the years and their memories carry on in film and photography still.

Rin Tin Tin is probably one of the most well know German Shepherd in history. He was rescued from a German war dog kennel in 1918 by Corporal Lee Duncan. RinTin Tin was found with his mother and an litter of pups, the only living dogs in the kennel after a bombing. (full article)

Interview: Gordon Pollard Imaging, pet photographers

Every photographer has a preference on what subjects they shoot. And like that preference they have for subject matter, they also have a preference for style and technique.

Many pet photographers prefer natural lighting and atmospheres when photographing pets.

Others prefer the control of a studio environment. Tyler Pollard at Gordon Pollard Imaging is one such photographer. (full article)

Interview: Gretchen Steele, hunting dog photographer

A typical morning for many photographers is up early, dress nicely, and out the door for coffee on the way to the studio or location.

But Gretchen doesn’t start her day like most photographers. She’s up long before the sun, suited up in camo, yes I said camo, and in a duck blind or field, waiting for dawn to break. She’s prepped everything the night before and is ready to take on the days events.

Gretchen is a hunting dog photographer. Working dogs or not, they are pets, but these are pets that earn their keep so to speak. The dogs she works with hunt birds, both water and land, which means they are retrievers and pointers. They are breeds like Labradors, Spaniels of all varieties, and German Shorthairs.

The dress attire doesn’t sound very glamorous, but Gretchen says full gear is a must in a hunting atmosphere. She shoots in some of the most inclimate weather. Some organizations require a certain dress so sporting blaze orange pull over and a pair of knee high wading rubbers is all-the-fashion-craze in this venue…..      (read more)

Pet photography: Practice makes perfect

IMG_6463-1examS2There are countless numbers of photographers who are willing to photograph pets but for some, it’s a high anxiety shoot. Why? Possibly because most photographers do not have the opportunity to photograph pets as often as they do other subjects or events?

Photographers can get plenty of practice shooting a wedding or three, human subjects are always available for practice, and events can be found in droves. But how many opportunities does the average photographer get to shoot pet photography?

If you are one of those photographers, amateur or pro, looking for avenues to practice, here are some helpful hints in finding them. (read more)
