Gila's Place

A menagerie of eclectic things…

My neighbor posted a special from an area butcher’s market today on social media today. They had 25 lb. cases of miscut bacon for $37 and some change. That included taxes.

It doesn’t take a mathematician to realize what that kind of deal that is when your local box store is selling a lessor quality product for almost $4 a pound. I posted it on my social media account too so more people I know could save some cash on a great food item.

I got a couple of private messages about “why so cheap”?

My sister (works there) explained that the “miscuts” are just that. End pieces from the slab (slicers can only cut them so far to the end), slices too thin or too thick for an order (they do a lot of commercial supply). Other than irregular cuts there is no difference in the quality of the bacon.

I don’t know about you, but I really don’t care what shape or size my bacon is, especially for $1.49 a pound.

So, if you want to save a little cash on your food bill, pop into your local butcher and ask if they have any discounts on miscut meats. If they do, I’d venture to say it will have been well worth your trip.
