Yes, I understand the images aren’t pretty, but I wouldn’t tell children to look away; there’s a learning experience here for all ages.
My first thoughts were “awww, poor little coon,” but immediately switched to, “lucky bird!”
And now I know why so many large birds are dead on the highways. They are brave to a point of foolishness when they take command of what they claim as their meal, no matter where they find it.
I hope it made it.
During a recent cruise I came upon this scene. Bitter sweet- death for one, dinner for the other, and maybe more.
This majestic bird has claimed that coon. He’s standing on it, literally.
It’s brave. It gives me the eye, not caring a bit that I am so much bigger, so close, and watching his meal.
It’s brave… and a little stupid. It’s looking at something bigger than me and it’s moving., right at it.
60 mph fast, roughly, and still it stands its ground.
Then he looks back at me, like he’s faced down a moving bullet and not budged, so what do I want?
And suddenly I am an afterthought.
It can’t wait for the next bite of what must be like a steak to it.
It digs in, no longer caring who, or what, is around.
Nice looking bird. Brave and determined. I hope this wasn’t its last meal.
